Fasting on Saturdays

81621: Ruling on fasting on Saturdays

What is the ruling on fasting on Saturdays at times other than Ramadaan? What if the day of ‘Arafah happens to be a Saturday?.

Praise be to Allaah.

It is makrooh to single out Saturday for fasting, because of the report narrated by al-Tirmidhi (744), Abu Dawood (2421) and Ibn Maajah (1726) from ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Busr, from his sister, that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Do not fast on Saturdays apart from days when you are obliged to fast. If any one of you cannot find anything other than grape stalks or the twigs of a tree, let him chew it (to make sure that he is not fasting).” Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in al-Irwa’ (960). Abu ‘Eesa al-Tirmidhi said: This is a hasan hadeeth. What is makrooh in this case is for a man to single out Saturday for fasting, because the Jews venerate Saturday. End quote.

Ibn Qudaamah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in al-Mughni (3/52): Our companions said: It is makrooh to single out Saturday for fasting … what is makrooh is singling out that day. If he fasts another day along with it, then it is not makrooh, because of the hadeeth of Abu Hurayrah and Juwayriyah. If it coincides with a day that a person regularly fasts, it is not makrooh.

What is meant by the hadeeth of Abu Hurayrah is the report narrated by al-Bukhaari (1985) and Muslim (1144) from Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) who said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say: “No one of you should fast on Friday, unless he fasts (a day) before it or after it.”

The hadeeth of Juwayriyah was narrated by al-Bukhaari (1986) from Juwayriyah bint al-Haarith (may Allaah be pleased with her), that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) entered upon her on a Friday and she was fasting. He said; “Did you fast yesterday?” She said, “No.” He said: “Do you intend to fast tomorrow?” She said: “No.” He said: “Then break your fast.”

This hadeeth and the one before it clearly indicate that it is permissible to fast on a Saturday at times other than Ramadaan, for the one who fasts the Friday before.

It is proven in al-Saheehayn that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The most beloved of fasting to Allaah is the fast of Dawood; he used to fast one day and not the next.”

In this case it is bound to happen that he will sometimes fast on a Saturday on its own. So it may be understood from this that if Saturday coincides with a day that he habitually fasts, such as ‘Arafah or ‘Ashoora’, there is nothing wrong with fasting on that day, even if it is on its own.

Al-Haafiz stated in al-Fath that an exception to the prohibition on fasting on Friday is made if a person habitually fasts on a certain day, such as ‘Arafah, and it coincides with Friday.

The same applies to Saturday. We have quoted the words of Ibn Qudaamah concerning that above.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

It should be noted that different scenarios may apply with regard to fasting on a Saturday.

1 – It may be obligatory, such as observing a Ramadaan fast during Ramadaan or making it up later on, or observing a fast as expiation (kafaarah), or instead of offering a sacrifice when performing Hajj tamattu’, and so on. There is nothing wrong with that so long as he does not single it out deliberately thinking that there is some virtue in that.

2 – If he fasts on the Friday before, there is nothing wrong with it, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to one of the Mothers of the Believers who was fasting on a Friday: “Did you fast yesterday?” She said: “No.” He said: “Are you going to fast tomorrow?” She said, “No.” He said: “Then break your fast.” The words, “Are you going to fast tomorrow?” indicate that it is permissible to fast Saturday along with Friday.

3 – If it happens to be one of the days when it is prescribed to fast, such as Ayyaam al-Beed (the 13th, 14th and 15th of each hijri month), ‘Arafah, ‘Ashoora’, six days of Shawwaal for one who has fasted Ramadaan, and the ninth of Dhu’l-Hijjah. There is nothing wrong with that, because he is not fasting because it is Saturday, rather it is because it is one of the days when it is prescribed to fast.

4 – When it happens to be a day when he habitually fasts, such as a person whose habit is to fast alternate days, and the day that he fasts happens to be a Saturday, then there is nothing wrong with it, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said when he forbade fasting one or two days before Ramadaan begins: “except a man who (habitually) observes a fast, in which case let him fast.” This is similar.

5 – If he singles it out to observe a voluntary fast for one day only. This is what is forbidden, if the hadeeth forbidding it is proven to be saheeh.

End quote from Majmoo’ Fataawa wa Rasaa’il al-Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (20/57)

Self Ruqya

Self-Ruqya Treatment: Do It Yourself Treat Your Family

Dr. Khalid Aljuraisy
Language: English | Format: PDF | Pages: 292 | Size: 24 MB

Praise be to Allah, the Kind the Ever Caring (1), the Able, the Merciful, the Owner of the dominion. It is who answers the prayers of those in urgent need, who heals His slaves whom He tries with illness.

Praise is due to Him for His great blessings and generosity.

We testify that there is no God but Allah, alone without partners, and we testify that Muhammad is His slave and messenger, whom He has sent as a mercy to all mankind.

May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon Prophet Muhammad, his kin, his sahaabah (companions) and he dedicated followers.

Regrettably, some Muslims have neglected ruqyas. Others may have never thought about them at all. They may even see them as nonsense (2). However, the faithful believe that ruqyas are a worthy means of immense benefit for healing all physical and non-physical illnesses. Shari’ah statements confirm the permissibility of seeking healing by Qur’anic recitations and the Prophet’s established prayers. For example, Allah says, “…Say: It [the Qur’an) is for those who believe [in it] guidance and a healing.” [41/44] Also, according to the Hadith, “When Allah’s Messenger became ill, Gibreel (Angel Gabriel) would do (this) ruqya unto him: In the name of Allah, may He grant you healing. May He cure you of all illnesses, of the evil of whoever envies you, and of evil eyes.”(3)

Evidently, the ruqya literature has wide range of ruqyas. Basically, if a ruqya is permissible and it established to be beneficial, it is used. For example, some rqaais (performers of ruqya) use short surahs (Qur’anic chapters), such as Surat Al-Faatihah. Others may use a long one, such as Surat Al-Baqarah. Also, a selection of surahs can be used, e.g. Al-Faathiah plus Al-Falaq and An-Naas. Some may even use only one Ayah, e.g. Ayat Al-Kursi. Sometimes, water, oil or honey is used. The raaqi recites the ruqya unto clean water to be drunk by the patient, unto oil to be rubbed onto the body, or unto honey to be eaten.
In all the above-mentioned examples, the raaqi uses a permissible ruqya which he believes to be beneficial; and suitable for a Particular patient. This is based on the Prophet’s saying, “Let me see your ruqyas. Ruqyas are valid provided that they are void of shirk.”(4) The Prophet also says. “I see no harm (in ruqyas). Let whoever can benefit his fellow Muslim do so.”(5)

Evidently, some imams among the salaf (early righteous Muslims) used for ruqya Ayahs that had not been designated for ruqya earlier. For example, as mentioned by Ibn-Alqayyim in Attib Annabawi (Prophetic Medicine), for women having difficult labour, Imam Ahmad used to write as ruqya on white paper or something clean the following supplications, from the Hadith and the Qur’an:

– “There is no God but Allah, the Almighty, the Forbearing. Blessed be Allah, the Lord of the Glorious Throne. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds.” (6)
– “On the day when they see that which they are promised (it will seem to them) as though they had tarried but an hour of daylight. A clear message. Shall any be destroyed save evil living folk?” [69/35]
– On the day when they behold it, it will be as if they had but tarried for an evening or the morn thereof.” [79/46]
According to Ibn-Alqayyim, some the salaf (early Muslims) – Ibn-Taymiyyah among them – mentioned that Imam Ahmad had written that ruqya for several cases of difficult delivery.

It would be impracticable to detail salaf statements with respect to the ruqyas they based on ijtihad. Therefore, not only have I selected the Ayahs specified by evidence as ruqya, but have also included other prayers believed to be beneficial for the treatment of sihr (witchcraft), possession, the evil eye and other illnesses, physical as well as non-physical.

Ruqyah in Islam is the recitation of the Quran seeking the refuge in Allah, remembrance and supplications that are used as  a means of treating sicknesses  and other problems as the Quran is a source of healing.

This can be done to cure evil eye, possessions of Jinn,envy and magic.The secret behind this is that one puts his full trust, reliance  and dependance in Allah, the source of all healing and cure.

The Sunnah is to do it in odd numbers.It is permissible to have it done to you without asking for it and it is also permissible to ask someone to do it for you, but this is not recommended.

How to perform Ruqyah:

You can recite Ruqyah on yourself by gathering the palms of your hands and reciting in them the ruqyah and then blow in your hands and wipe area that is ill and hurting you.

You can also bring zam zam water preferably and recite 3, 5 or 7 times the following over it and blow every time you recite it:

Al Fatiha, Ayatul Kursy,the last 2 verses of Suratul Baqarah and the last 3 Surah of the Quran.You can add to that any Prophetic Dua’a and blow on it.

Drink from this water in the morning , in the afternoon and before going to bed and also you can wipe with it over the places that hurt you.

Ruqyah (Reciting Qur’an and Saying Supplications Over The Sick Seeking Healing) – Way Of Doing It – Permanent Committee

January 3, 2011

Reciting Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Mu`awwidhatayn, and Al-Fatihah as a cure for illness

Fatwa no. 446 :

Q: Is it lawful or not to recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al- Mu‘awwidhatayn (Surahs Al-Falaq and Al-Nas) and Al-Fatihah for the purpose of seeking healing? Did the Messenger (peace be upon him) or the Salaf (righteous predecessors) do so? Please, enlighten us.

A: Reciting Surah Al-Ikhlas, Mu‘awwidhatayn, Al-Fatihah and other Surahs is regarded as a permissible Ruqyah (reciting Qur’an and saying supplications over the sick seeking healing) which the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) legislated by performing it himself and approving it for his Sahabah (Companions).

Al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated in their two Sahih (authentic) Books of Hadith on the authority of Ma‘mar from Al-Zuhry from ‘Urwah that ‘Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said:

In his last illness, the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to blow breath (into his cupped hands) and recite Al-Mu‘awwidhatayn (Surahs Al-Falaq and Al-Nas) and then wipe over his body. But when his illness aggravated, I used to recite them over him and pass his own hand over his body for its blessing.

Ma‘mar asked Al-Zuhry  “How did he use to blow breath?” He said,

“He used blow into his hands and then pass them over his face.”

Al-Bukhari narrated on the authority of Abu Sa‘id Al-Khudry (may Allah be pleased with him):

Some of the Sahabah of the Prophet (peace be upon him) came across one of the Arab tribes, but they refused to extend to them hospitality. Then the leader of that tribe was stung, so they asked (the Sahabah), “Do you have any remedy or someone who can recite supplications over the sick as a cure?” They said, “You refused to offer us hospitality, so we will not do anything until you give us something in return.” And they agreed on a flock of sheep, so one of them (the Sahabah) started reciting Umm Al-Qur’an (Surah Al-Fatihah); gathering his saliva and spitting on it (the snake-bite), and the man got cured. Then they brought the sheep, but they (the Sahabah) said, “We will not take them until we ask the Prophet (whether it is lawful).” When they asked him, he smiled and said, “How do you know that it (Surah Al-Fatihah) is a Ruqyah? Take them (the sheep) and assign a share for me.”

The first Hadith indicates that the Prophet (peace be upon him) did recite Al-Mu‘awwidhatayn over himself during his illness, while the second shows his approval of his Sahabah’s recitation of Al-Fatihah as Ruqyah.

May Allah grant us success! May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and Companions!

3476: The virtues of ruqyah and du’aa’s to be recited therein

What are the virtues of a man reciting ruqyah for himself? What is the evidence for that? What should he say when he recites ruqyah for himself?.

Praise be to Allaah.

1 – There is nothing wrong with the Muslim reciting ruqyah for himself. That is permissible; indeed it is a good Sunnah, for the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) recited ruqyah for himself, and some of his companions recited ruqyah for themselves.

It was narrated that ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said: When the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was ill, he would recite al-Mi’wadhatayn over himself and spit drily. When his pain grew intense, I recited over him and wiped him with his own hand, seeking its barakah (blessing).”

Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 4728; Muslim, 2192

With regard to the hadeeth narrated by Muslim (220), according to which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) described the seventy thousand of this ummah who will enter Paradise without being brought to account or punished, and in which it says: “They are those who did not recite ruqyah or ask for ruqyah to be done, and they did not believe in bad omens and they put their trust in their Lord” – the phrase “they did not recite ruqyah” is the words of the narrator, not of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). Hence al-Bukhaari narrated this hadeeth (no. 5420) and he did not mention this phrase.

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

These people are praised because they did not ask anyone to recite ruqyah for them, and ruqyah is a type of du’aa’, so they did not ask others to pray for them. The phrase “and they did not recite ruqyah” which is mentioned in the hadeeth is a mistake (on the part of the narrator), for their ruqyah for themselves and for others is a good deed. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) recited ruqyah for himself and for others; he did not ask anyone to recite ruqyah for him. His reciting ruqyah for himself and others was like his making du’aa’ for himself and others; this is something that is enjoined, for all the Prophets asked of Allaah and prayed to Him, as Allaah tells us in the stories of Adam, Ibraaheem, Moosa and others.

Majmoo’ al-Fataawa, 1/182

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

This phrase is inserted in the hadeeth, but it is a mistake on the part of some of the narrators. Haadi al-Arwaah, 1/89.

Ruqyah is one of the greatest remedies that the believer should use regularly.

2 – With regard to the du’aa’ that is prescribed for the Muslim to say if he wants to recite ruqyah for himself or for someone else, there are many such du’aa’s, the greatest of which are al-Faatihah and al-Mi’wadhatayn.

A group of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) set out on a journey and travelled until they made came near one of the Arab tribes. They asked them for hospitality but they refused to do so. Then the leader of that tribe was stung, and they tried everything but nothing helped him. Then some of them said, Why don’t you go to those people who are staying (nearby)? Maybe some of them have something. So they went to them and said, O people, our leader has been stung and we have tried everything and nothing helped him. Do any of you have something? One of them said, Yes, by Allaah. I will perform ruqyah for him, but by Allaah we asked you for hospitality and you did not give us anything, so we will not perform ruqyah for you unless you give us something in return. So they agreed on a flock of sheep, then he started to blow on him and recite Al-hamdu Lillaahi Rabb il-‘Aalameen. Then he recovered quickly from his complaint and started walking, and there was nothing wrong with him. Then they have them what they had agreed to, and some of them (the Sahaabah) said, Let us share it out. The one who had performed ruqyah said, Do not do anything until we come to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and tell him what happened, and we will wait and see what he tells us to do. So they came to the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and told him what had happened. He said, “How did you know that it is a ruqyah?” Then he said, “You did the right thing. Share them out, and give me a share.” And the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) smiled. (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 2276, and by Muslim, 2201).

The du’aa’s that have been narrated in the Sunnah include the following:

Muslim (2202) narrated from ‘Uthmaan ibn Abi’l-Aas that he complained to the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) about pain that he had felt in his body from the time he had become Muslim. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to him: “Put your hand on the part of your body where you feel pain and say ‘Bismillaah (in the name of Allaah) three times, then say seven times, ‘A’oodhu bi ‘izzat-illaah wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajid wa uhaadhir  (I seek refuge in the glory and power of Allaah from the evil of what I feel and worry about).”

Al-Tirmidhi (2080) added: He said, I did that, and Allaah took away what I had been suffering, and I kept on enjoining my family and others to do that.” (Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi, 1696)

It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to seek refuge for al-Hasan and al-Husayn, and he would say: “Your father [ meaning Ibraaheemm peace be upon him] used to seek refuge with Allaah for Ismaa’eel and Ishaaq with these words: A’oodhu bi kalimaat Allaah al-taammah min kulli shaytaanin wa haammah wa min kulli ‘aynin laammah (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allaah, from every devil and every poisonous reptile, and from every evil eye).’” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 3191.

And Allaah knows best.

Ruqyah for kids
⚽ When have you last done RUQYA for your children?! ⚽

 In the times we live in & the standalone families that we are (as expats), we mums are busy rushing here, there and everywhere for our children.

To get their meals done, diapers changed, their bodies washed, siblings' fights abated, schools attended, homework done, their extracurricular activities not missed, bed routines on time. And the list goes on...

 In all this dunya rush, do you remember including doing Ruqya for your children? And doing so VERY OFTEN, and not just when they fall sick.

Children are more helpless against al-'ayn (evil eye), sihr (magic), hasad (jealousy) & harm from amongst the jinns & humans. As mothers (& fathers) we should incorporate the protective Quranic & Sunnah measures in our daily routine, the easiest time being at the children's bedtime.
The Prophet (salAllahu 'alayhi wassalam) out of his deep love for his grandsons al-Hassan and al-Hussayn (radiallahu 'anhum) used to supplicate for them the dua that Ibrahim ('alayhi salaam) used to supplicate for his sons Isma'il and Ishaaq.

 "A’oodhu bi kalimaat Allaah al-taammah min kulli shaytaanin wa haammah wa min kulli ‘aynin laammah"

[I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah, from every devil and every poisonous reptile, and from every evil eye] (Sahih Bukhari, 3120)

⏩ The scholars also recommend reciting (with Eeman & Tawakkul) al-Mu‘awwidhatayn 3 times each (i.e Surah Falaq & Nas) over them and to wipe their bodies whilst reciting. Or to recite the Surahs into one’s hands and blowing in them while spitting (v.lightly), then wiping your hands over their bodies.

Reciting Surah Al-Fatiha, Ayat Al-Kursi (surah 2:255) is also part of Ruqya.

 And when they are bigger, teach them to read Ruqya on themselves just as you do on yourself before you hit the sack! (sleep).
❎ Other protective measures from the Sunnah that we should be implementing to make our homes a believer's fortress, is to bring the children in just before MAGHRIB TIME. Our Prophet (pbuh) warned us against the dispersing harmful devils at that time.

☑ Saying BISMILLAH before going out & entering the house with them, when closing your doors and windows, and when covering your open ustensils rack at night.

☑ Giving ADHAAN in your home (the father!) Of course not missing any of your daily salawat, dhikr & Quran recitation.

☑ Teach your children the sunnah of reading the DUA before ENTERING TOILET seeking refuge from the jinns & to avoid ruins/unclean places (garbage dumps, graveyards)

☑ In this age of social media, scholars warn us against posting our private family affairs, especially our children's PHOTOGRAPHS out to the public eye. Not just against sick-minded predators, also against a source of evil eye & jealousy.

 The onus is on us. Let us 'tie our camels' and insha Allah, our precious sprouts & families will always be under Allah's special Rahmah. Ameen.

Ameen.

Is putting on hijab a condition of reading Qur’aan?

http://islamqa.info/en/8950

8950: Is putting on hijab a condition of reading Qur’aan?

What are the rituals before reading the Qur'aan? And, does a sister have to be covered (full hijab) when reading it?

Praise be to Allaah.

It is not obligatory for a woman to put on hijaab in order to read Qur’aan, because there is no evidence to indicate that this is obligatory.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said that reciting Qur’aan does not require covering the head.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said in his comments on sujood al-tilaawah (prostration required when reading certain verses of the Qur’aan): “Sujood al-tilaawah is to be done when reading Qur’aan. It may be done in any state, even with the head uncovered, etc., because this prostration is not subject to the rulings on prayer.”

(Fataawa al-Jaami’ah li’l-mar’ah al-Muslimah, 1/249. See also Question no. 4908

“With regard to reading Qur’aan, it is not permissible for one who is in a state of janaabah (impurity following sexual activity) to read Qur’aan either from the Mus-haf or otherwise until he has done ghusl, because it was narrated that nothing prevented the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) from reading Qur’aan except janaabah. But if a person has broken his wudoo’ (minor impurity), then it is permissible for him to recite Qur’aan from memory because of the general meaning of the evidence.”

(Majmoo’ Fataawa al-Shaykh Ibn Baaz, 10/150)

It is better, and is mustahabb, to do wudoo’ before reciting, because this Qur’aan is the Word of Allaah. So it is better to do wudoo’ before reading it as a sign of respect. But touching the Mus-haf is not permissible unless one has done wudoo’, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Which (that Book with Allaah) none can touch but the purified”

[al-Waaqi’ah 56:79]

(Majmoo’ Fataawa al-Shaykh Ibn Baaz, 10/150)

And Allaah knows best.

Reading Qur’aan during menses

Does a woman have to wear hijaab when she does sajdat al-tilaawah?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
http://islamqa.info/en/2564
2564: Reading Qur’aan during menses
Is it permissible to read Quran while a women is having mensus (periods)?
Praise be to Allaah.
This is one of the issues on which the scholars, may Allaah have mercy on them, differed.
The majority of fuqahaa’ say that it is haraam for a woman to recite Qur’aan during her period, until she is taahir (pure) again. The only exceptions they make is in the case of dhikr (remembrance of Allaah) and phrases that are not intended as tilaawah (recitation), such as saying “Bismillaahi’r-Rahmaani’r-Raheem” or “Innaa Lillaahi wa innaa ilayhi raaji’oon”, or other phrases from the Qur’aan which are repeated as general du’aa’s.
They base their evidence for forbidding menstruating women to recite Qur’aan on several things, including the following:
Menstruation is seen as coming under the rulings that apply to one who is junub (in a state of impurity following sexual intercourse), because both states require ghusl. This is based on the hadeeth narrated by ‘Ali ibn Abi Taalib (may Allaah be pleased with him), according to which the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to teach the Qur’aan and he never prevented anyone from learning it except those who were in a state of janaabah (impurity).” (Reported by Abu Dawood, 1/281; al-Tirmidhi, 146; al-Nisaa’i, 1/144; Ibn Maajah, 1/207; Ahmad, 1/84; Ibn Khuzaymah [??], 1/104. Al-Tirmidhi said: a saheeh hasan hadeeth. Al-Haafiz ibn Hajar said: the truth is that it is the type of hasan hadeeth that could be used as evidence).
The hadeeth of Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with them both), according to which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The menstruating woman and the one who is in a state of impurity (janaabah) should not recite anything of the Qur’aan.” (Reported by al-Tirmidhi, 131; Ibn Maajah, 595; al-Daaraqutni (1/117); al-Bayhaqi, 1/89. This is a da’eef hadeeth, because it was reported by Ismaa’eel ibn ‘Ayyaash from the Hijaazis, and his reports from them are da’eef as is well known to those who are conversant with the study of hadeeth. Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah said (21/460): it is a da’eef hadeeth by the unanimous agreement of the scholars of hadeeth. SeeNasb al-Raayah, 1/195; al-Talkhees al-Habeer, 1/183).
Some scholars say that it is permitted for a menstruating woman to recite Qur’aan. This is the opinion of Maalik, and one opinion narrated from Ahmad, which Ibn Taymiyah preferred and which al-Shawkaani believed to be correct. The scholars based the following points on this opinion:
The principle is that things are allowed and permitted unless there is evidence to the contrary. There is no such evidence to say that a menstruating woman is not allowed to recite Qur’aan. Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah said: “There is no clear, saheeh text to indicate that a menstruating woman is forbidden to recite Qur’aan… It is known that women used to menstruate at the time of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), and he did not forbid them to recite Qur’aan, or to remember Allaah (dhikr) and offer du’aa’.”
Allaah, may He be glorified and exalted, commands (Muslims) to recite Qur’aan. He praises the one who does so, and promises him (or her) a great reward. No one is excluded from this except the one concerning whom there is solid evidence (daleel), and there is no such evidence in the case of menstruating women, as stated above.
The analogy between the menstruating woman and the one who is in a state of janaabah is made despite the fact that there are differences between them. The one who is in a state of janaabah has the option of removing the “barrier” by making ghusl, unlike the menstruating woman. A woman’s period usually lasts for some length of time, whereas the person who is in a state of janaabah is required to do ghusl when the time for prayer comes.
Preventing a menstruating woman from reciting Qur’aan deprives her of the chance to earn reward, and it may make her forget something of the Qur’aan, or she may need to recite it for the purposes of teaching or learning.
From the above, it is clear that the evidence of those who allow a menstruating woman to recite Qur’aan is stronger. If a woman wants to err on the side of caution, she can limit her recitation to the passages which she is afraid of forgetting.
It is very important to note that what we have been discussing here is restricted to what a menstruating woman recites from memory. When it comes to reading from the Mus-haf (the Arabic text itself), a different rule applies. The correct view of the scholars is that it is forbidden to touch the mus-haf when one is in any kind of state of impurity, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “… which none can touch except the purified.” [al-Waaqi’ah 56:79]. In a letter to ‘Amr ibn Hazm, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) told the people of Yemen: “No one should touch the Qur’aan except one who is taahir (pure).” (Reported by Maalik, 1/199; al-Nisaa’i, 8/57; Ibn Hibbaan, 793; al-Bayhaqi, 1/87. Al-Haafiz ibn Hajar said: A group of scholars classed this hadeeth as saheeh because it is so well known. Al-Shaafi’i said: It is proven by them that it was a letter sent by the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr said: “This letter is famous among the scholars of seerah, and is so well known among the scholars that it does not need an isnaad. It is like tawaatur because the people accepted and recognized it. Shaykh al-Albani said that its is saheeh. Al-Talkhees al-Habeer, 4/17. See also: Nasb al-Raayah, 1/196; Irwaa’ al-Ghaleel, 1/158).
(Haashiyat Ibn ‘Aabideen, 1/159; al-Majmoo’, 1/356; Kashshaaf al-Qinaa’, 1/147; al-Mughni, 3/461; Nayl al-Awtaar, 1/226; Majmoo’ al-Fataawaa, 21/460; al-Sharh al-Mumti’ li’l-Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen, 1/291)
